Dermatology and Venerology

Dermatology is the medical specialty that deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of over 3,000 skin, hair and nails conditions.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and the first defense line against pathogens and physical factors. It has an important signal function, being an indicator of the body’s health condition and of internal pathological states which can be first diagnosed by the dermatologist.  The first signs of certain hepatic, autoimmune, rheumatic, hematologic and oncological diseases can appear on the skin and nails, which lies at the heart of multidisciplinary cooperation in dermatology cases approach.

Apart from medical dermatology, the main branches of this specialty are represented by pediatric dermatology, surgical dermatology as well as cosmetic dermatology

Patient’s initial clinical assessment is done through TBSE (total body skin examination), a complex evaluation of the skin, oral and genital mucosa, scalp and nails, completed with dermoscopy of pigmented skin lesions. Depending on the type of lesion, paraclinical investigations or skin biopsy are recommended for histopathological evaluation and diagnostic certainty.

There are several types of dermatological therapies that are used for skin disease management. These can include: topical and systemic therapy, cryotherapy, laser therapy, phototherapy, surgical interventions. Cosmetic dermatology (or aesthetic medicine) is the branch of this specialty that focuses on the treatment of premature aging, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, cutaneous tumors and scars.
